The American School of Douala celebrated its 40th anniversary on Saturday, March 30th at the
school’s campus in Bonapriso, Douala.The celebrations kicked off in the early hours of the
morning with the arrival of Dr. Asheri Kilo, the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Basic
Education. She shared a handshake with the other dignitaries, staff members, and parents and
proceeded to take a guided tour of campus. The hallways of the school were lined up with over
30 science and social studies projects and art exhibitions done by students. Attendees
interacted with students at their various stands as they gave details about their projects and
shared their inspiration with them.
The second phase of the 40th anniversary took place in the school’s auditorium and featured a
welcome speech from the Director of the American School, Mr. Michael Breece. In his speech,
he recounted the history of the American school and also thanked all guests for honoring their
invitation, staff members for providing an incredible learning experience for the students and the
students for upholding the school’s values. Recognition prizes were handed over to outstanding
students in the science and social studies fair and to school community members for their
excellent work so far. The highlight of the award ceremony was the handing over of recognition
prizes to Madam Bridgette Mesumbe, who has been one of the school’s cleaner for forty years
and Mr. Michael Abali who started out as a gardener 40 years ago and is today the school’s
driver.
After the awards ceremony, the celebration entered its final phase filled with festivities including
cultural dances performed by the students, cutting of the cake by Dr. Kilo, popping of the
champagne and refreshments. Guests departed with warm wishes for the school and a joyful
memory of the American School of Douala at 40.
